Skills of the Agile Coach – Facilitation

Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches are responsible for maturing their groups of people into high performing teams. That also means highly collaborative ones — and facilitation is the key skill.

Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches are responsible for maturing their groups of people into high performing teams. That also means highly collaborative ones. And at the heart of collaboration is facilitation — the art of creating the conditions in which a group can do its best thinking together.

Facilitation is not the same as running a meeting. A facilitator is not the smartest person in the room who tells everyone else what to do. A facilitator is the person who creates the space for the group's collective intelligence to emerge. This requires neutrality, active listening, powerful questioning, and a deep trust in the group's ability to find its own answers.

For Agile Coaches, developing facilitation as a core competency is not optional. It is the skill that makes all other coaching skills possible. Without it, even the best technical knowledge and Agile expertise will fall short of its potential.
