The Oxford Dictionary defines "self-management" as, "the taking of responsibility for one's own behavior and well-being." It is something we talk about in the context of Agile teams — but it is equally, if not more, important for the Agile Coach themselves.
An Agile Coach who cannot manage their own reactions, biases, and emotional state will inevitably project those onto the teams they serve. Self-management is not about suppression — it is about awareness and intentional choice. It is the foundation upon which presence, empathy, and effective coaching are built.
Developing self-management as a coach means building practices that keep you grounded: reflection, supervision, peer coaching, and a commitment to your own continuous growth. The coach who invests in themselves invests in every team they will ever serve.
