Saving Agile
As year's end approaches, it's natural to get a little reflective. This year my attention goes to the current view of Agile — what it means, what's at risk, and what saving it really requires.

Shuhari (Kanji: 守破離 Hiragana: しゅはり) is a Japanese martial art concept, and describes the stages of learning to mastery. Shuhari has been referenced in the Agile community for some time, and for good reason — it maps beautifully onto the journey of an Agile practitioner and the evolution of Agile practice itself.
Shu (守) — Follow the rules. In this first stage, the student follows the teachings of the master precisely. In Agile, this is the stage of learning the practices: running standups correctly, writing user stories, following the Scrum framework. The rules exist for good reasons and must be understood before they can be transcended.
Ha (破) — Break the rules. In this stage, the student begins to understand the principles behind the rules and starts to adapt them. In Agile, this is where practitioners begin to tailor practices to their context, to experiment, and to develop their own judgment about what works and why.
Ri (離) — Transcend the rules. In this final stage, the student has so deeply internalized the principles that they no longer need the rules as a guide. Their actions flow naturally from understanding. In Agile, this is the master practitioner — someone who can look at any situation and know intuitively what is needed, drawing on a deep well of principle and experience.
