Business Value – The Holy Grail

Business value delivery is at the heart of Agile, and search for its real meaning has become a sort of Agile Holy Grail. Yet when you step far enough back, the answer is surprisingly clear — and surprisingly human.

Business value is not a metric. It is not a story point, a velocity, or a burn-down chart. It is the degree to which what we build actually improves the lives of the people who use it, and the health of the organizations that depend on it. Everything else is a proxy.

The Agile community has sometimes lost sight of this in the pursuit of measurement and process. The Holy Grail is not a number. It is a commitment to understanding what truly matters to customers and stakeholders — and delivering that, relentlessly and with discipline.
